The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) affirms that education is a fundamental human right for everyone. Eliminating inequalities and disparities in education is one of the major challenges faced by many countries taking this into consideration it is important to provide accessible education including professional trainings to build capacity of the human being.
In partnership with TBZ Mumbai, Cultural Academy for Peace is implementing in a project named Pankhi since 2019. This project, aiming to help and empower women survivors of domestic violence, this programme covers the whole state of Kerala. It has a single helpline number that can be called from anywhere around the country. Callers through the helpline desk are provided with suitable help. The Academy provides Legal support, Counseling and Rehabilitation to the survivors with the support of counselors.
In August 2018, the South Indian state of Kerala was hit by an unusually heavy rainfall causing the worst floods in the region in nearly a century. Almost 500 people lost their lives and an estimated million had to be evacuated. During this time Cultural Academy for Peace was actively involved in the affected areas providing people with food packets and cooking kits. After the floods had receded CAP was also engaged in relief activities helping people restore their livelihood back to normal. Cultural Academy for Peace associated with supporters, Panchayats and Local Self Governments.
Shanthi Bhavan functions as a Short Stay Home to lend a helping hand to women in distress and need. Facilities also include the provision of a safe and secure stay for women and girls below poverty line. Under the supervision of SAKHI services like occupational therapy, trauma healing, skill training and physiotherapy are provided for physical and emotional restoration and rejuvenation by eminent psychiatrists, psychologists and psychotherapists.
Appointed by the Kerala State Social Welfare Board, Cultural Academy for Peace functions as a Service Provider under the ‘Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act-2005’. The professional staff, legal counselors, visiting psychiatrists and psychologists are available to cater to the needs of individuals and families, with problems in interpersonal relationships or psychological problems for free of cost. The professional counselors also give online counseling to those who cannot reach Cultural Academy for Peace on regular basis.
Large number of people in this area belongs to SC/ST caste including two Christian and one Muslim family. Our team conducted a need analysis study to identify priority areas for interventions. It was also found the only mode of transportation of the residents is through a tiny little ferry, which can accommodate only 25 people at a time. This is a huge problem as almost everyone on that island needs to go to the mainland for work, education, and even to go to a hospital!
The mediation centre aims to resolves disputes at the community level under the supervision of trained community mediation officers. The disputing parties discuss their issues with the assistance of a trained mediator for out of court settlement, any type of conflict ranging from domestic to property issues are resolved with scientific mediation process. Early intervention at community level avoids escalation of disputes that would otherwise result in expensive and traumatic court litigation.
Cultural Academy for Peace provides Legal aid which aims to empower vulnerable and key populations with an increased knowledge of laws and their rights, also making them aware of the ways to seek redress for human rights violations, including discrimination of any type. Around one third of women worldwide have experienced physical and/or sexual violence by an intimate partner; and 18% have experienced such violence in the past 12 months. In the most extreme cases, violence against women is lethal: globally, an estimated 137 women are killed by their intimate partner or a family member every day.
The Wheels for Women is a novel initiative to empower and bring women to the main stream of society by giving training of three-wheeler vehicle (Autorickshaw). Ms. Kathleen Mulligan and Mr. David Studwell, an energetic and dynamic couple from the US who visited and interacted with the members of Shantibhavan (a home for women in crisis situation) helped to initiate the program. Cultural Academy for Peace is functioning as the nodal agency. The main aim of this project is to empower destitute women who are bread winners and enable them to support their families financially with a steady income.
