Workshop on “Substance Abuse and Its Impact on Women, Children, and Families”
As part of the International Women’s Day 2025 observance, Cultural Academy for Peace organized a workshop at Shanthibhavan focusing on “Substance Abuse and Its Impact on Women, Children, and Families” in association with Jai Bharath Arts and Science College,Perumbavoor. The workshop brought together experts from various fields who shared insights from psychological, legal, and social perspectives. Ms. Beena Sebastian, Founder and Chairperson of Cultural Academy for Peace, delivered the presidential address, emphasizing that the pursuit of women’s rights, equality, and freedom must be approached holistically, with the involvement of all sections of society. She highlighted the urgent need for collective action to tackle social issues like substance abuse, which disproportionately affect women and children.

Dr. C.J. John, Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at Medical Trust Hospital, Ernakulam, explained the psychological dimensions of addiction as a complex health issue rather than a moral failing and unveiled the “Connect to Protect – Be Responsible” poster, promoting prevention through strong family relationships. Sri. Ramesh K.K., Assistant Excise Inspector (GR) from the Excise Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, Ernakulam Zone, discussed the rising trends of substance abuse in Kerala, particularly among youth, and stressed the importance of vigilance, education, and community support.
Social activist Jyothy Narayanan added a gendered perspective, highlighting how addiction often leads to violence, financial instability, and emotional trauma for women and families, calling for community-based interventions to address their specific challenges. Smt. Shahina K., Sub-Inspector of Police, Kadavanthra Police Station, shared a law enforcement perspective, outlining legal measures and emphasizing the link between combating addiction and advancing women’s empowerment.
